Folded into volume 2 of a 10-volume edition of the works of Fontenelle is this lovely map of the solar system, placed opposite the title page of the Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds. No artist or engraver is indicated. This edition dates from 1766. It's not the oldest book in the house but it is the oldest of those I have so far examined in which I have found a map. There is a celestial globe and what looks like a map in the frontispiece to this volume. 'Clavaro' must be Pierre-Augustin Clavareau, and the engraver must be Claude-Augustin-Pierre Duflos: |
