Les Vampires, 9 - 'L'Homme des poisons'
Interiors = Venenos's laboratory; the concierge's lodge, an apartment, the maids' landing and the Brémontier apartment, all 'Rue d'Artois'; Guérande's home; two police stations:
Exteriors = 'Rue d'Artois' and vicinity' streets in Brunoy and Epinay-sous-Sénart; roads near the Sénart forest; the 'pyramide' at Brunoy and the Hôtel de la Pyramide; the railway bridge and station at Brunoy:
1/ '115 rue d’Artois':
This is not 115 Rue d'Artois, 8e, it is 22 Cité Malesherbes, 9e. Feuillade had already used this gated street as a location three years before, in Juve contre Fantômas: |
After the attack on Jane and Philippe's engagement party, Venenos escapes by a window and climbs onto adjacent roofs. later one of the Vampires climbs onto the roof of the building where Jane and her mother live:
These buildings are a part of the Cité Elgé; the one on the first image was seen in Episode 8, where it was supposed to adjoin the garden behind Philippe Guérande's building. The building in the background of the second image is still standing, at 59 Rue de la Villette:
Musidora anaesthetises Mazamette outside the house in the Cité Malesherbes and Hortense carries Mazamette away to dump him, then the police pick him up for being drunk:
We might suppose that she has not carried him very far, and that this is somewhere near the Cité Malesherbes. Actually it is 23 kilometres away in Brunoy, a town south-east of Paris:
The sleight of montage that disguises a topographical inconguity, effacing the distance between Paris and Brunoy, announces the topographical shift at this point of the episode, as the whole of the action now shifts to Brunoy and vicinity. Philippe has summoned Jane, her mother and his mother to the safe haven he has found for them:
This is a side entrance to a château at Epinay-sous-Sénart, near Brunoy:
From here we follow Irma Vep to the 'pyramid' (more of an obelisk) by the forest of Sénart and the Restaurant de la Pyramide:
There is some activity in and around the restaurant, and then a car chase:
The chase ends in the centre of Brunoy, by a bridge near the railway station:
Feuillade had already filmed trains at Brunoy for episode 8 of Les Vampires and earlier for Juve contre Fantômas (1913); he returned for Barrabas (1919), usiing various parts of Brunoy including the bridge over the tracks:
